T-Mobile will start insuring more than just phones next week
Even better, you'll pay just one monthly fee to cover all your WiFi devices excluding phones.
TLDR
- T-Mobile is set to introduce insurance coverage for all Wi-Fi-connected devices, including those not purchased from T-Mobile or connected to its network. Basically all devices that do not have a cellular network connectivity.
- The program will be priced at $25 per month, allowing for claims of up to $5,000 in damages each year. This one time fee will cover unlimited devices, with the exception of mobile phones.
- An additional fee will be incurred for each claim, ranging from $0 to $89. According to Tmobile, changes are forthcoming. A leaked document indicates that T-Mobile Protection 360 HomeTech will launch on November 19.
T-Mobile partners with Assurant for its in-house insurance program, and reports suggest this partnership will continue. The new plan will cost $25 per month (plus tax) and will protect against accidental damage, out-of-warranty electrical or mechanical issues, and power surges. Furthermore, it includes 24/7 live technical support.
Notably, this optional insurance will cover an unlimited number of Wi-Fi-enabled devices—excluding mobile phones—without the need for device-specific registration or qualifying events for enrollment. Each incident will allow for claims of up to $2,000, with a total maximum of $5,000 in claims over any consecutive 12-month period.
What types of devices are eligible?
Essentially, any device with Wi-Fi connectivity, including items not bought from T-Mobile or not connected to its network. While the documentation does not provide a comprehensive list, it mentions gaming accessories like Xbox controllers, smart home devices, streaming devices, smart TVs, computers, connected speakers, and more. Below is a brief overview:
Ultimately, the value of this insurance depends on the frequency of device breakage. For those with small and young children or a tendency to drop devices regularly, the additional coverage may justify the cost. Conversely, if incidents are rare, the extra $300 annually could seem excessive, particularly if one goes years without filing a claim.
It is important to note that T-Mobile has not yet officially confirmed this extended insurance program. We will provide updates as soon as official announcements are made.
